Week 9 - Lack of Motivation

Tuesday, 27 February

I had an appointment booked at the gym this morning at 8am to go through part one of my new strength and conditioning programme.  It had snowed overnight so I was a bit wary of driving over to Chorley.  When I walked Ruby, I went along Pennine to see what it was like and it had been gritted and was clear.  As I therefore only had to drive down Snowdon and would then be on clear roads, I decided to give it a go.  Less than 15 minutes after I had got Ruby back home I set off very slowly down the hill (I'm driving a two ton van so it's even more scary going downhill in snow) but when I got to Pennine, it was covered in a thin layer of snow, even though it had been clear minutes before.  I persevered but when I got to Fernhead I felt the van sliding so decided to give up and go back home.  Being completely inept at driving in snow, I lost traction going back up Snowdon and had to abandon the van half way up.  I really do need to practice more!

Feeling annoyed at not getting my gym fix, I went out for a run in the snow.  All was fine heading up to George's Lane but, after passing Pike Cottage, I started to feel my feet slipping.  There was a layer of ice underneath the snow.  I ran on the grassy verges instead to get traction and then turned off George's Lane on the wide track towards the terraced gardens.

As I was running down the track I was thinking about how great the grip is on my new shoes and the next minute I was on my arse!  To be fair to my new Saucony Koa STs though, any shoe other than a Oroc would have been useless because it was sheet ice.  Nobody around to laugh at me so pride intact I continued down and decided to zigzag my way through the gardens.  I was now quite wary though as there were so many patches of ice hidden by the snow.  I ended up walking a lot of the descent because I was wary of falling again as it was quite rocky here and would probably hurt!  Once I got onto the track from the school to the barn though it was nice again, although there were still a couple of icy patches but I managed to avoid slipping on them.

It's lovely running in the snow, if somewhat precarious at times.

Total distance - 3.5 miles

Thursday, 1 March

Again had to cancel my new strength and conditioning session today due to the bad weather and my fear of driving my van down the hill.  I'm getting really anxious now that I've missed my sessions since Friday!

Feeling annoyed with myself for cancelling, I devised my own S&C workout using my Reebok step and a Swiss ball.  Not quite the same without heavy weights but better than nothing.

Saturday, 3 March

I finally made it to the gym this morning for my new S&C session.  Dave said that he had written it after I had cancelled on him a couple of times so it was particularly brutal.  He was kidding of course, well about how he had written it in anger but not about how brutal it was.

The session looks like this:

  • Press ups x 5 and roll outs x 5 on the hoops x 4 sets
  • Barbell press x 5 followed by burpees x 5 followed by tyre flips x 5 - twice over x 4 sets
  • Reverse leg press x 6 each leg followed by double leg jumping four hurdles and box jump x 4 sets
  • Pull downs x 8 followed by seated row x 8 followed by band pulls x 8 each side x 4 sets
  • Plank position, one leg off the floor, hold for 30 seconds, then other leg off floor for 30 seconds, repeat until collapse x 4 sets
Very tough one!

Yesterday I received an e-mail to say that the Peelers Hike which I was due to participate in on Sunday was cancelled due to the bad weather.  It's been rearranged for 15 April but, unfortunately, I'm not available.

I'm finding it really difficult at the minute to motivate myself to get out for a run or a ride.  I'd like to pretend it is the winter weather but that's not the case as I quite like bad weather exercise.  I'm just feeling incredibly lazy.
